The Brazil-Portugal split is unusually wide in speech and narrow in writing. European Portuguese reduces or deletes unstressed vowels heavily, which compresses words and makes the language sound consonant-dense; Brazilian Portuguese keeps vowels open and adds palatalisation, so de and te often sound like dj and tch. Grammar diverges too: Brazil uses você where Portugal uses tu with different verb forms, and gerund constructions are standard in Brazil where Portugal prefers an infinitive. Both are handled, but they are not interchangeable audio.
African Portuguese adds more. Angolan and Mozambican Portuguese carry Kimbundu, Umbundu and Changana borrowings and a different rhythm, and both are the working language of business and government meetings across those countries — oil and construction in Luanda, mining and logistics in Maputo. Cape Verdean speakers may move between Portuguese and Kriolu in a single conversation, which is closer to code-switching between two languages than to shifting register.
