Urdu is written right to left in the Perso-Arabic script, traditionally in the sloping Nastaliq style, and short vowels are usually not written at all. That means the reader supplies a lot, and it means a transcript has to get word choice right rather than merely getting the sounds right. Spoken Urdu and spoken Hindi overlap heavily in everyday grammar, but the formal registers diverge sharply — Persian and Arabic vocabulary on the Urdu side, Sanskritic on the Hindi side — so a meeting about a contract or a policy sounds nothing alike.
In Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad the working reality is Urdu-English switching, and it is register-driven rather than random: relationship talk, negotiation and framing in Urdu, then the numbers, the technical terms and the legal language in English. Many Pakistani professionals also write Urdu in Roman script in WhatsApp and email while speaking it in full. Does GetNotes write Urdu in the correct right-to-left script?
Yes. Urdu transcripts come back in the Perso-Arabic script with correct right-to-left rendering, not transliterated into Roman letters. If English words were spoken inside the Urdu sentence, they appear in Roman script in place, which is how bilingual Urdu documents are normally written anyway.
Can it tell Urdu apart from Hindi in a mixed meeting?
The two share a great deal of everyday spoken grammar, so GetNotes transcribes what it hears rather than forcing a choice at the sentence level. In practice the vocabulary register decides the output: Persian and Arabic loanwords come out as Urdu. Select Urdu when you start the recording and the transcript will follow Urdu conventions.
