German puts the verb at the end, so you cannot know what a sentence means until it finishes — which is exactly why half-written meeting notes fail in German.
Two structural features make German meetings hard to note by hand. Verbs go to the end of subordinate clauses, so the decisive word arrives last and anyone writing as they listen has already committed to a guess. And German builds compound nouns freely, producing single words that encode a whole concept — the sort of term a transcript must reproduce exactly because it is the actual name of the thing being discussed. German business speech is also heavily Denglisch. A transcript that either drops them or renders them as German-looking nonsense makes the record harder to read than no record at all, because the reader cannot tell whether the error is in the transcript or in what was said. The honest caveat is Swiss German. Schweizerdeutsch is not an accent of standard German but a set of Alemannic dialects that differ substantially in vocabulary and phonology, and speakers switch into Hochdeutsch for formal or written purposes. A meeting conducted entirely in Zürich dialect is materially harder than one in Hochdeutsch, and worth a short test recording before you rely on it. Austrian German and northern and Bavarian regional speech are much closer to standard and transcribe well.

Standard German, Austrian German and most regional German speech transcribe well. Swiss German is genuinely harder — it is a set of Alemannic dialects rather than an accent, with different vocabulary and sound patterns. Will long German compound nouns be transcribed correctly?
